This was my first year working with Midwest Pond Features and they did an excellent job with my spring clean out. The owner, Sulaiman, has great communication and offered a bunch of helpful advice to improve how I maintain the pond, and even stopped by for a leak inspection at no cost. I would recommended any pond owner to work with them.

My sincerest thanks to all of you who have previously written reviews. If not for you, it may not have been such an easy decision for me to select Midwest Pond Features to clean my pond. They were fabulous. Sulaiman was a great communicator and extremely responsive. He and his team of 3 guys arrived on time, truly cared, and did an outstanding job. There are two pumps in my skimmer box, one for the waterfall and the second to prevent the pond from freezing by creating motion. The second pump had not generated any water movement for years despite my working with other firms. I mentioned it to Sulaiman, without any hesitancy, they blew out the lines. What a difference this pump has made in the water movement and enjoyment of our pond. A suggestion, don't spend any additional time looking for a firm to care for your pond. If you have read this review, then you have found them!!!

Completely unreliable; would not recommend. The owner had me waste 2 full days waiting for him to stop by to review a new pond design and provide a proposal. The first day, he changed the expected arrival time twice, only to cancel at the end of the day and asked if he could push it to the following day, which I reluctantly accepted. The following day (yesterday), he never showed up, nor had the courtesy to call/text. At the end of the second day, I needed to leave, so I texted him to simply let him know I was leaving, thinking he would apologize and attempt to reschedule again. I have since received no response. Thanks for wasting 2 days of my valuable time waiting for you.

Waste of time. Guy agreed to come by for an initial “consultation” and estimate. We set a time, then close to said scheduled time he had excuse for running late but that he was on his way. Over two hours later, another excuse, and instead of giving us the option to have him come by later, he said “by the time [he] got here, it’d be almost 8/9.” We agreed to have him come the next day, and again, excuse after excuse, we eventually stopped hearing from him. We had hoped he’d show up at some point, but after two wasted days of staying home waiting for him to show up, we gave up. Texted him in the evening that we had had to leave and never did hear back from him. Would’ve earned a higher rating if he had at least shown up and told us he couldn’t work with our pond needs.

Typical Chicago-Area Pond Installation Cost

Most professionally built koi ponds in the Chicago suburbs cost $15,000 to $35,000. A small starter pond runs $8,000 to $15,000, a mid-size ecosystem or koi pond with quality filtration and a waterfall lands around $15,000 to $30,000, and a large custom koi pond reaches $35,000 to $60,000 or more. If you mainly want the sound of water and no fish, a pondless waterfall runs $5,000 to $18,000. Upgrading an existing pond costs less: a liner replacement is $1,500 to $4,000 and converting a basic pond to a koi pond is $4,000 to $12,000. Size, depth, rock, filtration, and yard access move the number, which is why every quote starts with a site visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most professionally built koi ponds in the Chicago suburbs cost $15,000 to $35,000. A small starter pond runs $8,000 to $15,000 and a large custom build reaches $35,000 to $60,000 or more. Size, depth, filtration, and rockwork drive the price. Our koi pond cost guide breaks the number down line by line.
At least 3 feet, and 3 to 4 feet or deeper is the safe target in the Chicago area. That depth keeps an unfrozen zone below the frost line where koi rest at 38 to 42°F through winter. We build every koi pond to that depth as standard. See our koi pond depth guide for the numbers by pond size.
Most backyard ponds take 2 to 5 days of on-site build time, and large custom koi ponds run 1 to 3 weeks. From your first call through design, permits, and scheduling, plan on 4 to 10 weeks before the crew breaks ground. Spring and early fall book up fastest.
There is no statewide pond permit, but many Chicago-area villages treat ponds 24 inches or deeper like pools, which can mean a building permit, a fence, and an inspection. The pump’s electrical circuit always needs a permit. We check your village’s rules and pull the permit as part of every installation.
An ecosystem pond uses a skimmer, biological waterfall filter, rock, gravel, and plants to clean itself and carries a light fish load. A dedicated koi pond adds depth, a bottom drain, and high-turnover filtration to support many large fish, so it costs more to build and run. We build both, and we will tell you which fits your goals.
Yes. We are based in Glen Ellyn and build ponds across DuPage, Cook, Kane, Will, Lake, McHenry, Kendall, Grundy, and DeKalb counties, including Wheaton, Naperville, Hinsdale, Elmhurst, Schaumburg, St. Charles, Plainfield, Libertyville, and the North Shore. See our DuPage County service page for local details.
Yes. Almost every pond we build includes a waterfall, because it aerates the water as well as looking good. LED lighting, a stream, a bog filter, or a fish cave can be added at build time or later. Adding a waterfall to an existing pond typically runs $2,500 to $8,000.
