A bog filter is a shallow gravel bed planted with marginal plants. Pond water is pumped underneath the gravel and pushed up through it. Bacteria on the gravel and roots pull nitrogen and phosphorus out of the water, starving the algae that turns ponds green. Size it at 10 to 15 percent of your pond surface.

In the Chicago area, where clay soil holds nutrients and summer heat pushes algae hard, a properly sized bog does more for water clarity than any single piece of equipment you can buy.

What a Bog Filter Actually Does to Pond Water

A bog filter removes dissolved nutrients. That is the whole job, and most pond owners miss it, because they assume a filter is a filter.

Green water is a plant problem, not a dirt problem. Single celled algae bloom because the water carries free nitrogen and phosphorus from fish waste, uneaten food, decaying leaves and lawn fertilizer running off the yard. Screening the water does nothing to those nutrients. They are dissolved, the way sugar is dissolved in coffee.

A bog attacks the supply instead. Water moves slowly through 10 to 18 inches of gravel packed with beneficial bacteria, then through a dense mat of plant roots. The bacteria convert ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate. The plants take up the nitrate and phosphorus and build them into stems and leaves. Nutrients hauled off in a wheelbarrow of cut plant material in November cannot feed an algae bloom next July.

This is the backyard version of an established water treatment method. Municipalities build engineered wetlands to polish wastewater the same way, and the EPA’s overview of constructed wetlands describes that gravel bed and root zone process at a larger scale.

Water has to be pushed up through the gravel from below. This one detail separates bogs that run for a decade from bogs that fail in two seasons.

Water entering underneath rises evenly through the bed and contacts the full depth of gravel and the full root zone. Every square inch does work. Solids settle in the lower gravel, where they are held and slowly broken down, and the top of the bed stays open.

Pour water on top instead and you get channeling. Water takes the path of least resistance, cutting a few narrow tracks straight down through the stone and out. The rest of the bed sits stagnant and filters nothing. Worse, every particle the water carries lands on the surface and forms a crust of fine sediment. Within a season or two that crust seals the top, water sheets across it and runs off the edge, and you own a very expensive rock planter.

That is also why a bog cannot be fed by one line dumping in at a corner. It needs a manifold under the gravel that spreads flow across the entire footprint.

How to Size a Bog Filter for Your Pond

Plan on a bog surface area equal to 10 to 15 percent of your pond’s surface area for a lightly stocked pond, and 20 to 25 percent for a pond with a real koi load.

Sizing is by surface area, not volume, because the filtering happens across the face of the bed. A deeper bog is not a bigger bog. Depth past roughly 18 inches adds gravel cost and drives the bottom layer anaerobic, meaning oxygen starved, at which point it stops processing ammonia and starts producing hydrogen sulfide. Wide and shallow beats narrow and deep.

The flow column matters as much as the area. Move the pond’s full volume through the bog roughly every two hours, and keep the rate near or under one gallon per minute per square foot of bog surface. Faster than that and the water does not spend enough time against the bacteria and roots to give up its nutrients.

Undersizing is the most common mistake, and it fails in a specific way. A bog at 5 percent of pond surface handles the load in cool weather, then loses ground once water temperatures climb into the upper 70s and the fish are eating heavily. The pond looks great in May, goes green in mid July, and the owner concludes bogs do not work. The bog worked. It was too small. Building 30 percent larger than the table suggests is the cheapest insurance in the project.

Gravel Spec, Pipe Layout and the Clean-Out You Should Never Skip

Use washed, rounded gravel in the 3/8 inch to 3/4 inch range. Washed matters because unwashed stone carries fines that clog the bed on day one. Rounded matters because crushed angular stone locks together and cuts off water movement. A coarser 1 to 2 inch layer in the bottom few inches, around the pipe, helps flow spread before it reaches the finer stone.

Under the gravel sits the distribution manifold: perforated pipe, usually 2 or 3 inch, laid as a grid or a comb across the bed floor with the holes facing down or sideways so gravel does not drop in. Space the runs roughly 18 to 24 inches apart. Every part of the bed should get the same push from below.

Then there is the part almost everyone leaves out. Install a clean-out riser at build time: a vertical pipe from the low end of the manifold up to just above the gravel surface, capped, with its location noted. Every one to three years you open that cap and either pump the accumulated muck out or let the pond’s own pressure flush it into the yard. Twenty minutes.

Retrofitting one means excavating a mature bog: several hundred pounds of wet gravel moved by hand, root masses cut out of the pipe, and the planting rebuilt. A day of work and a season of ugliness to avoid a $30 part. Add the riser, and add two if the bed is large.

Pick vigorous, hardy marginals with aggressive root systems. The plant is doing nutrient work, so growth rate is what you are shopping for, not flower size.

Pickerel rush, arrowhead, blue flag iris, soft rush, sweet flag, water celery and marsh marigold all overwinter reliably in northern Illinois and root hard into gravel. Cattails filter beautifully and will also take over the bed and push into your pond, so use dwarf varieties or skip them. Plant densely, roughly one plant per square foot, because open gravel is unused capacity and it invites weeds and string algae.

These are not the plants that oxygenate your water column. Bog marginals work the nutrient side, submerged species do a different job, and a pond with both is far more stable than one relying on either alone. Very little, and that is fine.

Bog filtration is biological, and biology slows with temperature. Nitrifying bacteria go sluggish below about 55 degrees and nearly stop under 50. Plants go dormant. By the time water is in the 40s, your bog is a gravel bed with water moving through it. Anyone who tells you a bog filters year round in northern Illinois is selling something.

This does not matter, because the pond’s nutrient load collapses at the same time. Fish stop eating below roughly 50 degrees, so waste production drops to almost nothing, and algae is not growing either. Demand and capacity fall together.

The real winter decisions are about water and ice. Many owners shut the bog down, drain the plumbing so nothing holds water and cracks, and run a small pump or aerator in the pond to keep a gas exchange hole open. Others keep the bog running. Both work here, though a running bog needs enough flow to avoid freezing solid inside the gravel, and winter plumbing has to sit below or be protected against our 30 to 40 inch frost depth. Freeze and thaw cycles are hard on shallow pipe and liner edges, so how the bog is built matters more than how it is run.

Fall is also when most people plan the next season’s build, and it is a sensible time to dig: the bed settles over winter and gets planted first thing in spring.

When a Bog Filter Is the Wrong Answer

A bog filter is not a substitute for solids removal on a fish heavy pond, and treating it as one will cost you fish.

A koi pond with a dozen large fish and a real feeding schedule produces more solid waste than a gravel bed was ever meant to absorb. That waste has to come out of the water physically. Send it into a bog instead and it settles in the gravel, decays there, drives the lower bed anaerobic and plugs it from the bottom up. You get poor flow, a sulfur smell at the clean-out, and a rebuild years early.

The right arrangement on a heavily stocked pond is both: mechanical solids removal first, then the bog as a nutrient stripping stage behind it. The bog handles what stays dissolved, the mechanical stage handles what does not.

A bog is also a poor fit where there is no room, since a 3,000 gallon pond needs 40 to 70 square feet of bed and shrinking that to fit a tight yard guarantees the July failure above. Ponds in deep shade struggle, because bog plants need sun to grow fast. And a bog will not rescue a pond whose real problem is upstream: lawn fertilizer washing in, a downspout discharging into the water, or heavy leaf fall nobody removes. Fix the input first.

Very little work, and almost all of it lands in fall and early spring.

After the first hard frost browns the foliage, cut the plants back and haul the material away. That is the nutrient export, and skipping it undoes the season’s work. In spring, thin anything that has outgrown its space and pull volunteer weeds before they root into the gravel. Every two to four years, flush the bed through the clean-out. Every eight to twelve years the gravel itself may need to come out and be washed or replaced, which is the main long term cost of owning a bog.

Beyond that, watch the flow. A bog that suddenly runs slow, or where water starts finding one corner and spilling, is telling you the bed is loading up or the manifold is partly blocked. Catching that early keeps it to a flush instead of a rebuild. We check it during seasonal pond cleaning and maintenance, including the spring cleanout when the bed is easiest to reach.

If your pond goes green every summer and you have room for a bed at 10 to 15 percent of the pond surface, a bog is very likely the right move. If you keep a serious koi collection, add it behind mechanical filtration rather than in place of it.
